Supper Club with Rebecca Smith

Rebecca is the founder of Mamala, the women's health brand behind Support Snacks™: functional whole foods served up in a convenient pouch that help women heal, revive, and thrive. A mother of two in Miami, she started the company from a feeling she knew firsthand: knowing exactly what her body needed, with zero bandwidth to get it. At home, that same sense of care shapes her family table: simple meals, playful pieces, and the everyday rituals that inspired our conversation below.

What inspired you to start Mamala?
I was inspired by a really basic desire: to feed mom, and women more broadly. After my first child, I found myself in the cycle of supplements, coffee, and maybe one great meal a day. I knew what I needed; I just didn’t have the bandwidth to nourish myself properly. So I set out to create a (Support) Snack that could bridge the gap, getting whole foods into the women who need them, to functionally support everything a woman’s body goes through.
What do you wish more people understood about nourishing new mothers?
That the highest form of support is nourishment. To take it off her plate, to make sure she is fed, because nourishment supports her at every level: physically, mentally, and emotionally.

How has motherhood changed your relationship with food and feeding your family?
Motherhood made me see food as more than a vessel for energy and love, it’s education. I talk to my kids a lot about why we prioritize certain foods: what fats, protein, carbs, antioxidants, fiber, and sugar actually do inside the body. My son has been known to ask the grown-ups at birthday parties whether there’s dye in the food. It’s very funny. But I’m not precious about it I simply model what good eating looks like at home, and make sure they understand where their food comes from and how it’s working for them.

What does mealtime look like in your home right now?
Breakfast, dinner, and snack are serious business, lunch they get at school. For breakfast they order off a menu: homemade pancakes, chicken sausage and fruit, a bullseye (egg in a hole), smoked salmon and labne toast, avocado toast, or oatmeal with nut butter. For snack, they pack a cooler before we leave in the morning, and yes, they regularly pack Mamala for themselves. Dinner is simple and flavor-forward. The weekly rotation always includes lamb chops with chimichurri, a turkey taco bowl with grilled onion and pepper, a fish dish, and some variation on chicken thighs. They pick their carb, veg, and protein, and we eat as a family, always kicking things off with rose and thorn of the day.
What do you love about taking meals outside with your family?
We live in Miami, so eating al fresco is a joy we don’t take for granted. I love the ease of it, the kids can practically roll off their chairs and into post-dinner play without missing a beat, which gives my husband and me a chance to actually sit and shmooze.
How do you create a table that feels beautiful but still practical for everyday family life?
Unexpected cohesion. I’m not a matchy-matchy kind of gal. I love an element of surprise that, on second look, feels just right. Interesting glassware, a fun serving set, a splatter-paint mug. And always something floral, for a little whimsy.

What are your go-to pieces from Year & Day?
This is my third Year & Day set! My first was back in 2017. I love the splatter serving bowl; it brings the whimsy to all my sets. And The Cove glass is the perfect shape, cocktail, iced coffee, water, I’m reaching for it no matter the occasion.

What values are most important to you as you grow Mamala?
Quality, full stop. I won’t compromise on it. The way we make our product is unlike 90% of the pouches on the market. We make our Support Snacks™ aseptically: we cook the food at a low temperature, cool it, and then fill our pouches — unlike most, who cook their food right inside the packaging. It took us more than two years to figure out how to do it, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
The second value, just as important: our commitment to women’s health. Most products on the market were built around male biology and then marketed to all of us. We’re in the business of building for a woman’s biology, and yes, anyone can enjoy them.
What’s one thing you’ve learned about caring for yourself through motherhood?
No one is going to do it for you. You have to do it for yourself. You have to take that walk, write that gratitude list, call that friend - community asks you to actively be part of it. We’re all works in progress, and it’s on us to model what self-care looks like for our children.
Favorite time of day to gather as a family?
Dinner. Everyone’s bathed and hungry, it’s our first moment of complete togetherness, sharing rose and thorns. It’s always sweet and silly, and it’s the moment I get to look at all of them and just breathe them in.

Favorite outdoor hosting essential?
A gorgeous pitcher. Functional and beautiful.
One small ritual that helps you feel grounded as a mother?
Palo santo and a hot shower.
What does “nourishment” mean to you, beyond what’s on the plate?
Beyond food, it’s connection. Deep friendship, stimulating conversation. It’s in the failing and the learning, the succeeding and the recalibrating. Really, it’s the soul’s journey, facing our deepest wounds and finding the path to our fullest selves. Maybe I sound out there – but post Artemis II I’m zooming out everyday to the universe level.

What’s next for Mamala?
We’re building a women’s health platform: Support Snacks™ that deliver the whole foods women need most, conveniently and deliciously. From menstruation through menopause, women need real food for hormone regulation, microbiome health, sustained energy, and cognition. But our bandwidth is strapped, and we can’t supplement our way to health, we need real food!
So that’s the mission: get the food to them. Up next is more Support Snacks, in more places. More ways to nosh well.
