In this series, we sit down with our favorite hosts to hear their thoughts on entertaining. Stephanie Liu Hjelmeseth, the Creative and Mother behind Honey & Silk, takes us behind the scenes of an intimate dinner at her Los Angeles home. Read along for her tips for bringing people together for a delicious takeout meal, family style.
Why do you love hosting?
I love bringing good people together and sharing good feelings and conversations in the warmth of our home. It's one way I show my love and appreciation for those around me.
What are your top three hosting tips?
Light a candle at the door so your guests are instantly greeted with something delightful. Always get a couple more bottles of wine than you think you need. And invest in great dinnerware that will last, like Year & Day.
What's on your go-to dinner party playlist?
Something mellow and vibey, which could be a Frank Ocean playlist or the soundtrack to Big Little Lies.
What are the three words that describe your hosting style?
Elegant, Cozy, and Thoughtful
How did you decide what to incorporate into your tablescape?
I think about the season and menu, so since it's winter, we're serving a colorful meal of Italian food (all the red, green, and orange). I loved having white florals to contrast the table and Year & Day Moon and Midnight dinnerware to showcase the beautiful food.
Tell us about your favorite Year & Day products
I love the Big Bowls! It's versatile for any kind of meal and I always find myself grabbing one as my go-to. It's great for stir-fry or a big bowl of pho. I am also obsessed with the mug for my morning matcha latte. It's so elegant and pretty!
What's your favorite thing to serve?
If we're cooking, it'd be my husband's Coq Au Vin and my roasted vegetables with a bottle of Bordeaux. Otherwise we love a good family style meal of Italian from Jon & Vinny's!
